Recent news reports have identified that a number of schools across the UK are fingerprinting pupils for their records without the knowledge of their parents.
Hank Roberts, from the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, advised that other biometric data was also being used in the countries schools without prior consent.
He revealed that the information is used so children can take out library books, pay for school meals and perform other tasks which would usually require money or cards.
"Parental consent should be compulsory. It is outrageous that children’s fingerprints can be taken without parental consent," he told delegates at the union’s annual conference.
It is currently not illegal for both state and private schools to take biometric data including fingerprints and DNA samples from children. This can be done without consent from parents and information is only given back to the parents with prior consent by the government.
