DNA cold case review catches rapist 32 years after crime.

A DNA cold case review has lead to the arrest and eventual confession of A man admitted to raping a woman as she made her way home from a birthday party. Raymond May carried out the attack in 1978, but kept his guilty secret for more than 30 years, Durham Crown Court heard.

Following a check on the national DNA database, Raymond May’s DNA was matched to the DNA found at the scene of the crime, he will be sentenced next month.
The UK currently has over six million DNA profiles on the national database making it the biggest DNA database in the world. Each month over 30,000 new DNA profiles are added. Of the six million strong DNA database, 975,000 are profiles taken from people of have been convicted of a criminal offence.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson has said in 2008-09, some 79 rape, murder and manslaughter cases in England and Wales were matched to DNA profiles taken from people who had been arrested but not convicted of any crime.
